Susanville will come alive June 20 through June 22 during the annual Susanville Indian Rancheria Powwow at the Lassen Community College softball field. The annual event begins with the grand entry at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20.
“Powwows have been going on for years,” Powwow Chairwoman Amelia Luna says. “The powwow people call it the powwow trail—it starts at the beginning of the year. When winter has passed, we start hitting the powwows, bringing out our new beadwork, regalia, and other crafts we made during the winter months. We come together to reconnect with family and friends.”
1 of the highlights of the event is the dance circle.
“Dancing makes us feel good,” Amelia says. “We share the feelings of happiness and celebrate our good health.”
The 16th annual powwow honors veterans and native elders. Saturday afternoon, the powwow will honor all branches of the armed forces. Recognition will extend to native and nonnative veterans. A special honor and recognition will also be given to all native elders.
