Navigating the Complexity of Energy Policy
The 2025 legislative session is in full swing, and energy policy is at the top of everyone’s minds. Early in my career, I frequently heard colleagues criticize new laws and regulations, arguing they were disconnected from our daily workplace realities. While headlines celebrated these changes, many of us dismissed them as out of touch.
Over time, I’ve come to appreciate the complexity of the energy industry. It's a dynamic and multifaceted sector. Expecting our lawmakers to fully grasp every detail of the industry and the intricate cause-and-effect relationships is unrealistic.
As industry professionals, we have a responsibility to bridge this gap. We must educate lawmakers, guiding them to understand the unique needs of their constituents and how thoughtful policies can make a positive impact—while avoiding unintended detrimental consequences.
It's our duty to ensure regulations are crafted with insight and not for headlines, and that real-life scenarios are not just considered but made a priority. As I’ve said before, we rely on our industry partners to help guide our efforts on the state and federal levels. Organizations such as the California Municipal Utilities Association and Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems have staff experts who closely monitor proposed and existing legislation that affects our industry. Their dedication to protecting those served by community-owned power suppliers means we can count on them to keep us informed.
This February, we joined with other public power organizations, led by CMUA and UAMPS, to advocate for more informed energy policy. We met with lawmakers in Sacramento and Washington, D.C., to discuss key issues, such as energy affordability, reliability, and wildfire mitigation. Our goal is to help them appreciate the nuances of these critical topics and speak with a collective voice that helps lawmakers address challenges without losing sight of real-world issues. I appreciate the time our representatives and their staff members took to learn, understand, and engage with us.
Also, a huge thank you to the Lassen Municipal Utility District (LMUD) team and the many energy industry experts who took time away from their families to ensure our representatives are well-informed on the issues that matter most to our communities.
