Manager’s Message – October 2025

Celebrating Public Power Week & Planning for Our Future

Nick Dominguez

From October 5 through October 11, the Lassen Municipal Utility District (LMUD) joins more than 2,000 public power utilities across the nation in celebrating Public Power Week. Together, we provide safe, reliable, and affordable electric service to more than 55,000,000 Americans.

LMUD is governed by a locally elected board of directors tasked with making decisions in the best interest of our customers. Our team of 34 dedicated public power professionals live and work in Lassen County. They are committed to ensuring you have access to the critical electric services that power your home or business.

A Team That Serves

At LMUD, our staff are more than just utility workers; they are public servants. Whether restoring power during a storm, maintaining infrastructure, or answering your questions at the front desk, each team member approaches their work with a deep sense of responsibility and care. They understand electricity is a lifeline for families, businesses, and essential services.

Our lineworkers, engineering team, customer service representatives, and administrative support staff work behind the scenes every day to keep the lights on. Their commitment reflects the heart of community-owned power guided by service and grounded in community. They don’t just work here, they live here and take pride in serving their neighbors.

Balancing Reliability & Affordability

In last month’s Ruralite, I wrote about LMUD’s dual mandate: balancing the need for reliability and the costs of electric service. That balance is becoming more challenging as we approach the December 2026 completion of the Skedaddle Substation and NV Energy interconnection.

This new interconnection will significantly improve our system reliability by reducing our dependence on a single PG&E transmission line through Caribou Canyon. However, it also introduces new costs to LMUD’s operating budget, highlighting the reality that reliability and affordability are often competing priorities.

Transparency & Community Engagement

As a community-owned utility customer, you have a voice in managing priorities at the ballot box and public board meetings. This month, LMUD will hold a public rate hearing on October 28 to discuss a proposed three-year rate plan to ensure LMUD continues to provide safe, reliable, and affordable power. The hearing is designed to inform, engage, and listen. Your input helps guide the board in making decisions that reflect the needs and values of our community.

To learn more about how a rate hearing works, visit our website and click on the Public Notices link in the About Us tab at the top of the home page.

As always, we invite you to join us for our monthly board meetings, held at 5:30 p.m. on the 4th Tuesday of the month in our boardroom at 65 South Roop Street.
