Manager’s Message – October 2022

Public Power is Community Powered

The greater Susanville area receives electricity from Lassen Municipal Utility District (LMUD), 1 of more than 2,000 public power utilities providing electricity to more than 49 million people in the U.S.

LMUD employees have operated alongside our customers since 1988. LMUD was formed by Citizens Powers, a group of concerned citizens who had grown frustrated with their investor-owned utility. Their grassroots effort gave them a voice in how power was delivered to their homes and businesses.

Public power utilities are community-owned, which means the people we serve are included in decision-making.

Knowing our community’s needs helps us keep homes, schools, businesses and public places powered year-round. Local ownership allows us to:

  • Make the best decisions with input from customers, such as the NV Energy interconnection for improved reliability, use of local renewable geothermal and solar electric power generation. Customers can also install their own renewable electric generation while staying connected to the grid.
  • Improve the utility’s systems, including the power supply line to Eagle Lake communities after the Whaleback Fire, and install equipment for more efficient operation and faster outage response. We’re also improving reliability at the Shaffer Mountain communications site this year.
  • Plan and begin construction of the Skedaddle Substation and NV Energy interconnection. When completed the end of 2024, this system will improve electric reliability and help LMUD control future energy costs.

Another benefit you receive from LMUD’s not-for-profit business model is electricity rates lower than neighboring investor-owned utilities. Our loyalty is to our customers, not stockholders.

We take pride in our governance structure with an elected board of directors that understands our customers and supports system improvements. The LMUD board holds meetings open to the public every fourth Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at our offices, 65 South Roop Street.

LMUD will continue providing cost-effective, reliable electricity and excellent customer service.

Celebrating Public Power Week

Join us in celebrating Public Power Week, October 2 through 8. We have creative ways customers can participate in October, including:

  • Tell us what public power means to you with #PublicPowerWeek on our social media posts, and you’ll be entered to  win a $100 LMUD energy gift card.
  • Stop by our office and enter to win one of 10 solar-powered emergency radios.
  • Call our public relations manager, Theresa Phillips, at 257-4174 to schedule a presentation about LMUD’s future plans for your group or service organization.
  • Call Theresa to schedule a free highvoltage safety demonstration at your school or organization.
  • On Tuesday, October 11, from 6 to 8 a.m., the first 200 customers who visit the Susanville Supermarket bakery and say, “Public power builds better communities,” get a free doughnut, coffee or hot chocolate.

It is a sincere pleasure to serve you. We are doing our part to ensure we all enjoy the benefits of public power now and in the future. Visit lmud.org to find LMUD’s strategic plan. We welcome your feedback.

We thank you for supporting public power—an American tradition that works.
